Abbey Black Labrador Retriever Adult - Adoption, Rescue for sale in San Leandro, California

* * * Sweet Black Labrador Retriever in the Fremont Animal Shelter Needs a Home * * *

Abbey is still in the shelter hoping to find a forever home (as long as forever is for her). She was abandoned by her owner and left with people who refused to care for her. She was left in the backyard to starve to death, while the other dogs in the house were allowed inside and well taken care of. When animal control was eventually alerted, and Abbey was confiscated. She was at least 20 lbs underweight and it was discovered that she had a large mammary tumor. Under the care of an emergency vet, she gained her weight back and the tumor was removed, only to find out that it was malignant, and the cancer has spread to other parts of her body. The vet believes she has 6-8 months to live. However, if cancer is going to ultimately win this battle it has a long, tough fight ahead. Shelter staff believe that due to Abbeys energy and outstanding disposition, she may stretch out her time with us to a year or even two.

She loves people and just wants to retrieve a tennis ball, forever. When animal control officers found her, the first thing she did was grab a lemon off the ground from a lemon tree in the backyard and wanted the officer to throw it for a game of catch. It was a very emotional rescue. Even though she would be considered hospice, she has lots of energy and will need plenty of exercise (throwing a tennis ball a couple thousand times a day, should do it). She needs a house with a big backyard. She also should be the only dog in the home.

Nobodys Perfekt Dogs will provide support for her care until it is time to say goodbye. It is breaking our hearts that she is stuck in the shelter, when she should be living her life to the fullest, right now.
